HELP!!!!

Can anyone suggest to me how to get cat pee out of a mattress? Or is this the time to buy a new one?

Maybe you could try what is recommended for carpets? my handy-dandy "how to clean almost anything" book says for carpet to alternately sponge the stain with carbonated water and then blot it up until the stain disappears.

Hope that works.

As having been the caretaker (I was going to say owner but you know better as well) of many cats, that even if or when you get the odor to below a human threshold of smelling, it will still be there for the cats. My wife and I have used most all of the products including those that use enzymatic action to get rid of cat odors.

With the current situation, my advice would be to use a product from the pet store till the odor is undetectable and then flip the mattress over.

My good friend who has been a close associate of many dogs and cats recommended Don Aslett X-O Odor Neuralizer. I didn't use it on cat pee, but last year, my greyhound had an absolutely horrible case of bleeding gastro-enteritis. We had masses of bright red diarrhea and vomit that smelled like sour molten metal. This stuff took care of it, but as I recall, it wasn't cheap. Surprise, surprise.

With the depth of the mattress and the construction it will be impossible to reach all the areas that have been affected. A friend had this happen and tried everything, finally got a new mattress and kept the cat out of the bedroom.

I'd get rid of the mattress.

But I'd also ask, why is there cat pee on the mattress? The pee-er may be ill, stressed, afraid, or some combination of the above. So a vet check may be in order. Given the recent return of one of your cats, it could be the returnee, or it could be one of the other cats, now stressed because of the addition of a "new" cat in the routine of your new home.

I'd read this over Christmas as my daughter was taking care of her friend's cats over break, and she had to clean cat pee off the carpet. This info is specific for mattresses:

1. If the urine is recent, blot up as much of it as you can using paper towels or a sponge. Apply plenty of pressure to reach the dampness deep down. Stand on the paper towels for more pressure if necessary. If you own a wet/dry vacuum cleaner extract as much of the moisture as you can. If the urine has dried proceed to step two.

2. Mix a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water in a jug or other container. Pour a small amount of this solution over the area of cat urine. I used about 50mls. Then begin blotting as described above to soak up this solution.

3. Sprinkle a good handful of baking soda over the stain.

4. Mix a quarter of a cup of hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent and drizzle it over the area where you have sprinkled the baking powder and work it in using your fingers (wear rubber gloves) or a brush. Leave it to work for 15 minutes then begin blotting again.

5. When the mattress is dry vacuum thoroughly.

With a mattress it is very important to make sure it is thoroughly dry. If you live in a sunny climate the best idea is to put it out in the sun to dry. If you are unable to do this you can assist the drying process by removing it from the bed and standing it on its side in front of a heater or fan. Don't put it back on the bed until it is thoroughly dry.

I've tried all these things. Come the first hot day in Spring and you can smell it all over again. Save yourself a lot of aggravation and throw the mattress out. Keep all the bedroom doors closed until the offending cat works out what it is he or she is trying to tell you. If it continues, get him or her to the Vet.
